Graffiti prevention

Graffiti is a common problem for small businesses, especially in the more industrial areas that are not patrolled by security.  However there are many things you can do to stop graffiti appearing on your premises.

Make your property visible

  • Make your property stands out clearly from the road.  If vandals have got something they can hide behind when they are tagging, they will.
  • Make sure any lighting is working.  Especially street lights.  Get your local council onto replacing these.
  • Consider CCTV.  It is much cheaper now than it has even been.

Remove Graffiti Immediately

Get rid of tagging and graffiti immediately.  This is the best deterrent and it is important to remove graffiti as soon as you can.  The longer you leave it the harder it is to remove and the chances of more graffiti appearing increase.

Limit access to the property

  • Incorporate plants to restrict access to walls, fences and other graffiti targets.
  • Install fencing, bollards or other fixtures to prevent easy access to graffiti-prone areas.
  • Remove items that can be used as "ladders" to gain access to higher parts of your building.  e.g. rubbish skips or pallets next to the building make access easy.

Understand and Make Clear Boundaries

  • Make it obvious who owns or leases the property as this can make intruders be more easily spotted.
  • Try and create defined private, semi-public and public areas around your building by using signage, landscape features, changes in surface materials and lighting.
  • Make sure your building and surrounds are well-maintained and the building looks like a business is operating from there and that the building is not vacant,
